Life Member Passing: Lyall Phillips

It is with sadness that the SANFL Umpires Association advise of the passing of Life Member Mr. Lyall Phillips, at the age of 84, on Monday the 16th of September, following a short illness.

Lyall commenced umpiring with the SANFL in approximately 1963 and in the early days was a regular at dinners and social functions. His umpiring career was mainly in the Norwood/North and Country associations. He was an observer for the League, post his running days.

He had a significant impact on many cadet and junior umpires in the Norwod/North region during the 70’s and 80’s where he coached and mentored. He is fondly and respectfully remembered as a gentleman. He was a passionate supporter of the Norwood Football Club and made a vital contribution to the introduction of modified rules in their program.

Lyall was inducted as a Life Member in 1979 together with Messrs M J Smith (deceased) and M E Ducker. Lyall’s funeral WILL be held on Tuesday 24th September at 1pm at the Christian Gospel Centre, Main Road, Victor Harbor.

The SANFL Umpires Association, it’s members and Life Members pass on our condolences to the Phillips Family at this difficult time.
